POSITIVE ACTION

Monroe City Schools'

Safe Schools / Healthy Students Program

Louisiana Office

for Behavioral Health

Your YMCA is pleased to begin another year of Positive Action in the Monroe City Schools.  As the enclosed graphs indicate, we have shown a substantial impact on student attitudes and beliefs.  Likewise, our 2010-11 Teacher Survey affirmed the value of the program.  During the past school year, the teacher survey reflected the following results:

• 100% agree that Positive Action is helpful to students.

• 93% agree that Positive Action is valuable to their class

• 98% agree that Positive Action generates helpful discussions in their classrooms

• 88% agree that Positive Action inspires students to do better academically

• 90% agree that Positive Action is helpful with discipline problems.

The Positive Action program continues to contribute to school improvement in efficiency and effectiveness.  This program increases positive behavior such as academic achievement, attendance, a sense of belonging to the school and the community.  It simultaneously works to decrease negative behavior such as violence, suspensions, bullying, dropping out, truancies, sexual harassment, and drug, alcohol, and tobacco use. These results are consistently shown because the program helps students develop a strong, resilient character and a positive self-concept.

As we venture into the new school year, let us remember the Positive Action philosophy: "You feel good about yourself when you do positive actions. Positive actions are identified as the good things we do for ourselves and others. Positive actions address the whole self: the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional".

L. S., a fourth grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary: "Positive Action is very beneficial to our students as a definite progress in building self esteem and enhancing social skills is evident.”

 S. A., second grade, Jefferson Elementary: "The lessons are clear, simple, and easy to incorporate into the school day"

C.G., sixth grade, Martin Luther King Elementary: "It's a very helpful tool, especially for students having problems in their home and school life".
